International spinner Asif Afridi has been banned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for two years. The decision was made after Afridi pleaded guilty to two violations of the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Code. The first violation resulted in a two-year ban, while the second earned him a six-month ban. Both periods will run concurrently, starting from September 12th, 2022 when he was first provisionally suspended.

The PCB took Afridi’s admission of guilt, expression of remorse, and past track record into consideration when deciding on the ban. The Chairman of the PCB Management Committee, Mr. Najam Sethi, said that they don’t take pleasure in suspending a player, but they have a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. The PCB is investing in player education to prevent corruption in the sport. However, if a player still falls victim to corruption, they will have no sympathy.

It looks like Mickey Arthur and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are on the brink of reaching a deal that will bring Arthur back to the Pakistan Men’s cricket team, but this time as the team director instead of the head coach. The talks between the two ended three weeks ago, but last week the interim head of the PCB, Najam Sethi, revealed that he was still pursuing Arthur. It seems that the deal is close to being finalized, with Arthur starting as the team director from April 1st.

This management structure is quite unusual, as Arthur won’t be with the team on every tour, but will have a group of handpicked support staff running the operations. The lead among the support staff is expected to be former Pakistan fielding coach and one-time head of the High Performance Centre, Grant Bradburn, who will be serving as a high-powered assistant coach. There will also be coaches for batting, bowling, and fielding, but no post of Head Coach.

During the English county season, Arthur won’t be hands-on with the team, but once the county season is over, he is expected to be with the team for high-profile events such as the ODI World Cup in India and the Test tour of Australia. The duration of the contract is still being worked out, but both sides believe Pakistan’s schedule allows for such an arrangement to work.

One of the most intriguing appointments under Arthur is likely to be Rehan-ul-Haq, the general manager at the PSL franchise Islamabad United and a prominent broadcast analyst. He is expected to be the team manager, but with a broader brief than the traditional administrative role of managers. This role might be more like a chief of staff for Arthur, driving the team environment. Rehan is credited with creating the data-driven approach at Islamabad United, which has won the PSL twice.

Arthur was head coach of the Pakistan team between 2016 and 2019, during which time he helped transform the team and led them to a Champions Trophy victory in 2017. He played a key role in the development of several players, including Babar Azam, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and Shadab Khan. After his time with Pakistan, Arthur had a stint with Sri Lanka, and then joined Derbyshire. This return will reunite him with many of the players he had a hand in developing.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to let Pakistani players keep playing in the Bangladesh Premier League till February 8th. However, this only applies to those who aren’t taking part in the exhibition match set to take place in Quetta on February 5th. At first, the PCB had asked all Pakistani players to come back home by February 3rd, before the start of the PSL 8 on February 13th.

The franchises had wanted the players to come back earlier, so they could have some rest before the PSL started, but according to Najam Sethi, head of the PCB management committee, some players asked the franchises if they could stay and play in the BPL for a few more days.

The PCB made sure that the best players from the Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators would be available for the exhibition match in Quetta on February 5th by asking those players to come back home by February 2nd. Iftikhar Ahmad, one of the top performers in the BPL who even scored a century, is a part of the Quetta Gladiators and will be returning for the exhibition match.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has established an eight-member selection committee, responsible for conducting trials for the U13, U16, and U19 regional and district teams. Kamran Akmal, former Test wicketkeeper-batter, will serve as the committee chairperson, with other members including Sohail Tanvir, Amir Nazir, Taimoor Khan, Junaid Khan, Faisal Athar, Qaisar Abbas, and Sanaullah Baloch.

Each selector, along with the head coach of the region/district, will hold trials according to the schedule to be announced at a later date. The committee consists of experienced players, with Kamran Akmal appearing in 268 international matches and Sohail Tanvir in 121. Other members, including Junaid Khan, who played in 107 international matches, and Qaiser Abbas, who played in a Test against England in 2000, bring a wealth of experience to the committee.

The appointment of Kamran Akmal as the chief selector marks a new chapter in the development of young cricketing talent in Pakistan. With a new PCB Management taking charge after the departure of Ramiz Raja, and departmental cricket being restored, it is to be seen how Akmal can spearhead the committee that will provide the breeding ground for cricketing talent in Pakistan.
