Aaron Finch, Australia’s T20 Captain, has announced his retirement from international cricket. His career spanned over 12 years and saw him rack up over 8,000 runs across all formats.
Finch was known for his aggressive opening batting style and expertise in limited-overs cricket. He retired from the ODI team in September and took time to decide on his T20 future after Australia’s World Cup title defense fell short of the semi-finals. Despite his impressive performance in the recent domestic Big Bash League, where he amassed 428 runs at an average of 38.9 and led the Melbourne Renegades to their first finals appearance in three years, Finch has decided to hang up his cricketing boots.
In a statement, Finch expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent Australia and play with and against some of the greatest players in the sport. He cites the 2021 T20 World Cup victory and the 2015 ODI World Cup win on home soil as the two memories he will cherish the most.
Finch retires with 5,406 ODI runs at an average of 38.89, 3,120 runs in T20s at an average of 34.28, and the distinction of captaining Australia to their first T20 World Cup title in the United Arab Emirates in 2021. He was also a member of the Michael Clarke-captained team that won the 50-over World Cup in 2015.
